Transcription Model Guidelines - Fall 2015

I) Organization:
Divide notecards, foam board, poster board, and/or cardboard etc. into 4 sections. Alternatively, each of the 4 sections can also be placed on separate notecards, poster board, and/or cardboard if you so choose.

Section1:
Transcription Location/Starting material/Product/Destination of product

a. Model of DNA structure showing the deoxyribose and phosphate backbone as well as nitrogenous bases.

b. Clearly label each region of the DNA (Promoter, Start codon, Exons, Introns, Stop Codons)

Section3: Initiation

Section4: Elongation

Section 5: Termination

II) Scientific Accuracy:
For each phase of Transcription, generate a model that represents each step of the phase.

INITIATION:
1. Binding of RNA Polymerase to DNA
2. Unwinding of DNA from chromosome
3. Breaking of hydrogen bonds between complimentary base pairs of DNA
4. Start transcription (assembly of mRNA nucleotides) at start codon of DNA

ELONGATION:
1. DNA sequence being transcribed
2. DNA strand used as template to assemble pre-mRNA molecule
3. Sequence of pre-mRNA molecule
4. Labeled introns, exons, stop an start codons on pre-mRNA molecule

TERMINATION:
1. Removal of introns from pre-mRNA
2. Piecing together of exons of pre-mRNA
3. Addition of 5’Cap and polyA tail
MUST CLEARLY LABEL ALL PARTS OF MODEL!!!!!
